Congress is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. You are represented by one Representative in the House and by two Senators in the Senate. Representatives are elected every two years. It is a good idea to keep track of what your Representative is doing so that when election time comes, you can decide to keep or change your representation. If you would like to contact your House Representative, follow the steps below to send an email.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Compose your message in a word processing document. What do you want to communicate to your Representative? Keep it short, concise, and polite. If you are urging him or her to vote a particular way on a piece of legislation, provide your reasoning. If you are passionate about the issue, use persuasive and reasoned arguments in a calm tone.

  2. Step 2

Go to the U.S. House of Representatives website (a link is provided in the resource section below). Click on “Write Your Representative” in the upper left hand corner.

  3. Step 3

Provide your state and your zip code plus the 4 digit extension. If you are not sure of the 4 digits following your zip code, find an old utility bill sent to your address. Bills addressed to your home usually provide the full zip code.

  4. Step 4

Click “Contact My Representative.” You will be given a math question to prevent computer automated emails. Answer the math question and click submit.

  5. Step 5

Provide your name and address. You may also provide a phone number and email address, but this is not required. Click “Continue to Text Entry Form.”

  6. Step 6

Copy your letter from your word processing document. Paste it in the provided text box. Click “Send Your Message.” You have successfully voiced your opinion to your congressional representative.
