Tart and sweet blueberries are full of antioxidants.

Warm blueberry sauce sliding down a stack of fluffy pancakes or French toast makes any morning special. Round out breakfast with slices of bacon or sausages, juice and hot coffee. Warm blueberry sauce doesn't require much in the way of time, cooking skills or ingredients. It does require a bit of patience while the blueberries are heating up. Use the sauce as a crepe filling, over cake or to top ice cream. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups blueberries
  • Colander
  • 1 qt. saucepan
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • Spoon

Instructions

    • 1

      Place the berries in a colander and rinse under cold water. Shake to remove most of the moisture. The berries don't have to be completely dry.

      Put 2 cups of blueberries in a 1 qt saucepan over medium heat.

      Add 1/4 cup of sugar. Mash a few of the berries to get the juices flowing.

      Heat, while stirring, until the blueberries start to pop. When the sugar is dissolved, turn off the heat.

      Serve while the blueberry sauce is warm but not hot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add more sugar if you like a sweeter sauce or if the blueberries are a bit under ripe.

  • Substitute brown sugar, maple syrup or honey for the white sugar.

  • Use frozen unsweetened blueberries if fresh aren't available.

  • Some cooks add water to the blueberry and sugar mixture and then cornstarch to thicken it. This dilutes the flavor of the blueberries.

  • Watch carefully because sugar burns quickly.
