In order to find a GPS tracking device on your vehicle, make a thorough inspection of not only beneath the car, but the engine and all the mechanical parts as well. The process of detecting a GPS tracking device will take 30 to 45 minutes to complete, but if the detection process positively confirms that there is in fact a tracking device on the vehicle, locating it may take some time.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • RF Detector Auto jack or lift Small flashlight Mirror
  1. Step 1

Park the vehicle in a location at least 25 feet away from traffic to avoid the possibility of detecting signals from other surrounding devices. Turn off cell phones or any other devices that could transmit signals.

  2. Step 2

Plug in, turn on, and leave the RF detector. Since many GPS tracking devices only transmit signals every 20 minutes, detecting any signals can take up to up to 30 minutes to complete. The RF detector will continuously search for signals within range. If the sensor detects a GPS device, it must still be physically located through visual inspection.

  3. Step 3

Raise the vehicle using the auto lift off jack, enough to clearly see most areas of the underside of the vehicle.

  4. Step 4

Visually inspect all areas under the vehicle, including wheel wells, axles, oil pan, running boards, and the back side of any moving parts and between crevices. Tracking devices are small enough to be hidden anywhere, so all areas must be checked thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Using the mirror and flashlight, inspect any areas that cannot be clearly seen or visually inspected. This includes any dark areas, crevices, and seams within the design of the vehicle. Shine the light into crevices while using the mirror to see around corners.

Tips & Warnings
  • GPS trackers can be located anywhere on or in the vehicle. A thorough inspection of all mechanical parts, including the engine, as well as the interior of the vehicle should be checked in the same thorough manner.
  • Some GPS trackers are placed on vehicles for law enforcement vehicles, and it is illegal to remove or disrupt the signal of such devices. If you have concerns about an unidentified device found on your vehicle, check with your local law enforcement agency.
