If your Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable Modem has lost its connection to the Web, reset the modem. You can try this before going through all the trouble of disconnecting and re-connecting all of the cables, and it may fix your Internet connection. Resetting the modem is simple once you find the reset button, which can be difficult to locate because it's hidden on the modem and it isn't labeled.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn the Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable Modem so that the back of it is accessible to you. There's no need to disconnect any of the cables.

  2. Step 2

Find the "Reset" button on the modem. It's a small recessed button located between the USB port and the cable outlet.

  3. Step 3

Use a pointed instrument to push the button. Hold it for 10 to15 seconds to allow time for the modem's indicator lights to go off.

  4. Step 4

Release the Reset button. The lights will gradually begin to come on as the modem connects to the communications channels between the cable provider, the computer and the Internet provider. When all the connections are made, the lights will stablize.

  5. Step 5

Attempt to connect to the Internet. If your connection works, resetting the modem is all you needed to do. If it doesn't, you'll have to check with your user guide or contact customer service for further help.
