How to Put Up a Hammock
Different types of hammocks require different procedures to hang them safely. Although the overall principal is the same, you don't need two trees evenly spread apart to hang a hammock in your yard. Install a single post to use in addition to a tree, install two posts or purchase a hammock stand. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the length of the hammock. This will help you determine the equipment you'll need, and where to position the hammock. Find two trees that are 12 to 15 feet apart, or position two posts the same distance apart. Anchor points that are 1 to 2 feet longer than the overall length of the hammock are ideal for hammocks with spreader bars. Hammock braces can be adjusted to accommodate most hammocks.
-
2
Clear the hammock area of any debris (if applicable). Cut any shrub or tree branches, and remove rocks or any other debris.
-
-
3
Measure the hammock height after the anchor points are in place (see Tips for posts). For spreader-bar hammocks, 4 feet high will suffice. Hang hammocks without spreader bars 6 to 8 feet high. Drill a small pilot hole into the anchor point.
-
4
Screw in the hooks until the threads of the hooks are flush with the anchor point. Do not over-tighten.
-
5
Attach an S-hook to one end of the hammock (preferably a supplied hardware ring), then attach an extension chain to the S-hook.
-
6
Hang the extension chain to the screw hook on the anchor point. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the other side of the hammock.
-
7
Test the hammock. Approach it from the middle of one side, and sit in the hammock as if it's a large swing. Lift your legs up and lie back. This will tell you if you have obtained the correct height for the hammock. If not, make tension adjustments by shortening the extension chain links. If necessary, reposition the screw hooks higher.

Tips & Warnings
Hammocks made of flexible material, like cotton, will stretch over time. Always use an extension chain between the S-hooks and the screw hooks so you can tighten up the slack. To install hammock posts, dig at least 2 to 3 feet into the ground. Use 4-by-6 inch, exterior-treated hardwood for hammock posts. Set the posts inside the hole and set with quick-dry cement. Allow at least 48 hours before using the posts for the hammock.
