In an effort to free up hard drive disk space, many computer users are always looking for files that they can safely delete. The Download folder located within the Software Distribution folder of the Windows directory contains the setup files of downloaded and installed applications and Windows updates.

Instructions

      Go to the Windows desktop and click on the "Start" button. The Start Menu will appear.

      Click on "My Computer," then double click on the icon for your computer's hard drive. This is usually labeled as the C: Drive.

      Open the folder labeled as "Software Distribution."

      Locate the folder labeled "Download" and right click on it. A drop down menu will appear.

      Select "Delete" from the drop down menu and click "Yes" when prompted "Are you sure you want to send to the recycle bin?". That's it - you have successfully removed the Download folder.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another way to increase space on your hard drive is to use the Windows Defragmentation tool. This can be found by opening the Properties window of your hard drive.
