Camping is a great American tradition and offers families the opportunity to vacation in the great outdoors. While some families choose to rough it in a tent, others opt for a cabin or other semi-rough accommodations. Camping in a trailer offers a middle ground between the two, allowing for a real outdoor adventure while providing some of the basic comforts of home. The popularity of camping trailers can be traced back to the early days of the automobile and interstate highways, with images of the family wagon towing a silver Aerostream trailer a common sight. While today's high-tech camping trailers are a long way from the early models, there is a model to fit almost any family's needs. The information in this article will offer some basic tips for camping in a trailer.

Things You'll Need:

  • Camping trailer Truck or other tow vehicle Camping gear
  1. Step 1

Select an appropriate trailer. If you already own a trailer, skip to the next step. If you plan to rent or purchase a trailer, take into consideration the number of people going on the trip, geographical features of your intended camping area, time of year or any weather concerns and the limitations of your towing vehicle. These points will assist you in choosing a trailer that will provide the level of comfort and safety necessary for a successful trip.

  2. Step 2

Make a detailed list of items to pack. Take into account anything that cannot be purchased near the campsite and will need to be packed for the trip. Items such as refrigerated food or medications, large or bulky items, or items of a flammable or toxic nature will need extra attention. Use this list to assemble or purchase the items needed for your trip.

  3. Step 3

Pack gear for the trip. Checking against your packing list, load items into the trailer, or the towing vehicle, as room permits. Be sure to consider the weight of your gear and distribute items appropriately. Be careful to avoid packing in living areas of the trailer, as this may become a storage issue at the campsite.

  4. Step 4

Select a location. When you arrive at your destination, consider your trailer location carefully. Check for uneven surfaces, loose gravel or rock or areas with poor drainage. Such issues can cause uncomfortable or even unsafe conditions for your trailer. Avoid blocking traffic or pedestrian areas and leave enough room to park your towing vehicle separately. Your choice of trailer location should allow easy access but also provide a safe distance from campfires, water or other hazards.

  5. Step 5

Set up camp. With your trailer parked, carefully level and secure it per the manufacturer's instructions. Confirm that it is set up correctly prior to allowing anyone inside or around the trailer. When extending foldouts or raising the roof, be sure to check for tree branches, limbs or other obstacles that may block or damage the trailer. Set up a campfire area away from the trailer to prevent damage to the trailer and provide a safe campsite.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check your vehicle's owner's manual for towing guidelines and restrictions. Practice maneuvering, parking and backing your trailer in an open area before heading into crowded campgrounds. While your trailer may have electrical hookups, ask if it has a backup generator for rural areas or in an emergency.
  • Never pack camp stove fuel, kerosene or other toxic or flammable items in the living area of your trailer. Check the trailer owner's manual before packing anything on top of the trailer. Never park your trailer close to a lake, river or other body of water.
