How to Remove Sun Java

The Sun Java plug-in makes it possible to do more with your Web browser, like play many online games and chat within the browser window. But if you don't want a computer to have these capabilities either because you think they'll be a distraction, or because you want to conserve system resources, you can remove the Sun Java software.

  1. Removing Sun Java in Windows

      Click the "Start" button, then click "Control Panel."

      Double-click the "Add or Remove Programs" icon.

      Scroll down the alphabetical programs list until you reach programs beginning with "J." All Sun Java versions are listed with the word "Java" first. You may have more than one Sun Java plug-in installed.

      Click on a Sun Java program to highlight it, then click the "Uninstall" button.

      Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the uninstallation. If you have additional Sun Java plug-ins you'd like to remove, repeat Steps 4 and 5 as necessary.

    Removing Sun Java on a Mac

      Click the Finder icon on the dock or desktop.

      Browse through the applications listed in the Finder for any and all Java applications. There may be more than one.

      Remove each unwanted Java application by clicking it, holding down the mouse button and dragging it to the trash.
