How to Write a One-Page CV

With a growing workforce and more academic-focused job applicants, employers have to be more efficient in their time and how they select their applicants. To that end, many employers are asking for one-page resumes or one-page CVs.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your current resume and highlight areas of importance (if available).

    • 2

Create a section for Contact Information. List your name on one line and your mailing address, primary phone number and email address on a new line.

    • 3

Create a section for Education. For each degree you hold, list the name of the degree, the issuing institution and associated date(s) on one line.

    • 4

Create a section for Professional Experience. List the position held, your employer's name and the associated date(s) on one line. Describe your role or position in one sentence.

    • 5

Create a section for Professional Memberships. List each membership you hold, the issuing institution and the associated date(s) on one line.

    • 6

Create a section for Awards and Publications. List each professional award you have received, the issuing institution and the associated date(s) on one line.

    • 7

Include references, if there is room. List their name, their title, the organization they are affiliated with and their preferred contact information.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to stick to the one-line rule as much as possible but use good judgment. If there are some areas that warrant using more space, do so. Have someone review it before submitting it to any academic institutions or potential employers. Choose only the most important things to include. If they are interested, you will have an opportunity to discuss these additional items.

  • Pay attention to formatting and spacing. If you need more space, use it. If putting information on one line makes it difficult to read, adjust where necessary. Making the font smaller is not effective. Use an average font--size 12, no smaller than size 10.
