How to Acquire Domain Names
Acquire domain names for web business or personal uses. The owner of a domain can keep it whether it gets used for a website or not. A domain name can also be sold to an interested party for profit. There is an annual fee for domain name registration that must be paid through a domain registrar or service.

1
Choose a domain registrar. Visit a few registrar's websites. Compare pricing for domain name registration and check for promotional specials. Select a registrar to handle your domain registration business.
-
2
Research the availability of a particular domain name. Visit your chosen registrar's website. Type the desired domain name into the search box on the home page. The registrar will offer the domain to you on the spot if it is available.

3
Register a domain name. Accept registration of a domain name as soon as you find out it's available. The name could get taken by someone else in minutes. Fill in all required personal information on the registration form. Pay the registration fee with a credit/debit card or PayPal account.
-
4
Find the owner of any domain name that is already registered. Click the "More info," "Research" or "WHOIS" option on the registrar's report of a domain name that is not available. The owner, registrar or hosting company will be identified as the registrant with contact information including a physical address, email address and phone number.

5
Contact a domain owner to inquire if the domain name you desire is for sale. Use professional courtesy to make an inquiry without making an offer. The reply may include an asking price. Use a different contact means if you do not get a reply. Many business owners answer phone calls, but ignore email. A domain owner who does not respond is probably not willing to sell.
