How to Fix a Loose Jeep Wiper Arm

The wiper arm on your Jeep is what connects the wiper blade to the wiper motor. It's not unusual for wiper arms to work themselves loose - especially on older Jeeps. This can happen for a few reasons. When you change your wiper blades, you may accidentally loosen the bolt holding the arm down to the wiper motor. Another way that the arm can become loose is during the winter when you manipulate the wiper arm to remove snow or ice off of the windshield. To prevent damage to the wiper blade and the arm itself, you should fix the loose Jeep wiper arm as soon as you notice it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Socket wrench and socket set Thread locker Brake parts cleaner Q-tips
  1. Step 1

Loosen the retaining nuts on the wiper arms and then remove the nut.

  2. Step 2

Pull the wiper arms away from the windshield of your Jeep. There is a joint on each wiper arm that will allow you to "fold" the arm up and away from the windshield.

  3. Step 3

Pull the wiper arms off the windshield of your Jeep. If you pull the arm straight out, it will slide off.

  4. Step 4

Inspect each wiper arm retaining nut for damage.

  5. Step 5

Clean the threads on the wiper motor studs with brake parts cleaner and a Q-tip. To do this, spray the brake parts cleaner on the Q-tip, and then clean the threads on the wiper motor studs. Then let the brake parts cleaner dry.

  6. Step 6

Clean the threads on the wiper arm retaining nuts with brake parts cleaner and a Q-tip, and then allow the retaining nut to dry.

  7. Step 7

Place the wiper arms back on the wiper motor studs, but do not fold them down against the windshield yet.

  8. Step 8

Place a small amount of thread locker onto the threads of the wiper motor studs.

  9. Step 9

Tighten the wiper arm retaining nuts onto the wiper motor studs.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can try to fix the old wiper arms, however, if the threads have been stripped on the retaining nuts, then you may need to replace the entire arm. If you do this, you will need to repeat the process outlined above with the new wiper arms.
  • DO NOT get brake parts cleaner on any painted surfaces, as it is a powerful solvent that can damage your Jeep's clear coat and paint.
