There are increasing demands placed on computers today by multimedia available on the Internet and also by more advanced software. This can manifest itself in a very slow-running computer and can lead to frustration for the user. Everyone wants a fast computer, but what exactly does that mean? A computer's speed is not something that is determined by just one element, but instead by a number of them working together. The steps below will explain what to look for when looking to buy a fast computer.

Look for computer models with faster central processor units (CPU). CPUs come with a rating that is expressed in MHz, and with all other things being equal, the higher the number, the faster the processor. A 1 GHz (gigahertz) processor is faster than a 500 MHz (megahertz) processor.

Select a model that has higher bus speeds. This rating is also measured in MHz, and again, the higher the rating, the better.

Shop for computers with larger amounts of RAM (random access memory). RAM is measured in MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes). Newer, faster, types of RAM are also being developed, so ask the salesperson about this.

Choose from computers that have hard drives with higher spindle speeds. This speed is measured in rpm (revolutions per minute). A hard drive with a spindle speed of 7,200 rpm will perform faster than one with a 5,200 rpm rating.

Buy a computer that has the best combination of the above elements. You will then have a computer that is built for speed and will perform fast for you.
