How to Make a Twine Necklace

Twine necklaces are rope-like necklaces that are popular among home jewelry makers. These necklaces are usually sold in gift shops, especially along the beach. They are most frequently worn in the summer months. Rather than purchasing an overpriced twine necklace in a gift shop, make your own and design it exactly how you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut six pieces of twine approximately 5 feet long.

    • 2

Thread all six pieces of twine through the charm, bead, shell or stone until your decoration is in the center of the twine.

    • 3

Affix each piece of twine to the cardboard using push pins. Pin each piece above the decoration to keep it from sliding as you braid.

    • 4

Separate the twine into three sets of two strands.

    • 5

Braid the twine by taking the set of strands on the left and crossing it over the center set. Then, take the set on the right and cross it over the new center set. Continue braiding like so until you have created a braid that's approximately 7 inches long.

    • 6

Separate the twine into two sets of three strands.

    • 7

Tie a knot in each set, close to the braid.

    • 8

Cut the excess twine, but leave enough to tie the necklace.

    • 9

Remove the pins from the cardboard, flip the necklace around and repeat the above procedure on the other side of the decoration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use more than one decorative piece in your necklace if you wish. Simply braid one section, then thread another charm, bead, shell or stone through the twine and continue braiding. Use colored twine to give your necklace extra flair.

  • Keep both strands of each set side by side as you braid so that the necklace remains flat. Otherwise, the twine will bunch.
