How to Find out What City a Telephone Number Originates From

Many people hesitate to answer a phone call when they do not recognize the caller's number or area code. Such phone calls can become annoying if the caller does not leave a message. If the phone call is from a local number, you may be able to identify the city of origin using resources available on the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the phone number or save the number onto your phone.

    • 2

Go to the "Reverse Lookup" portion of the White Pages website (see Resources below).

    • 3

Type the phone number you want to look up into the "Phone Number" text box found at the top of the page.

    • 4

Click "Search." White Pages will then search for that phone number.

    • 5

Read the information found next to the "Location" heading on the next page. This is where the city for that particular phone will be listed. If more information for the phone number is available (such as the name and address associated with that number), these details will be listed on the Web page, as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • The city listed for a cellphone number will be the city where the cellphone was purchased. This may not be the same city the call originated from. For example, a person with a Pennsylvania cellphone number could call you from another state.
