How to Have Donated Furniture Picked Up

If you have usable furniture you don't want, consider donating it to someone who needs it rather than throwing it away. Your unwanted furniture could be used by people who have lost their furnishings in a natural disaster, women who have left abusive relationships, college students and formerly homeless people who are trying to furnish a home.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer Internet Service
  1. Step 1

    Contact the Salvation Army. Locate local stores by visiting the organization's website and entering your zip code in the "Locations" search box. (See Resources.)

  2. Step 2

    Contact the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. Locate local agencies by visiting the organization's website and entering your zip code in the "Find My Agency" search box. (See Resources.)

  3. Step 3

    Contact Goodwill Industries International. Find the nearest donation center by entering your name, address and phone number on the company's website. (See Resources.)

  4. Step 4

    Contact the Purple Heart Pick Up Services if you live in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland or Virginia. Complete the online pickup request form. (See Resources.)

  5. Step 5

    Contact churches in your community. Speak with the person in charge of accepting donations. Inform her that you have usable furniture that you would like to donate. Arrange a time and date for the pickup.

Tips & Warnings
  • Donations are tax-deductible. Request a receipt when the furniture is picked up.
  • Do not request pickup of furniture that is too damaged or filthy to be used by another person. Your donation might be denied.
