Broccoli sprouts are a healthy and delicious addition to a salad or sandwich. Grow your own fresh sprouts, organically, and in less than a week after buying your broccoli seed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase broccoli seed that has no insecticides or fungicides on it. An open-pollinated seed is the best choice for sprouts

  2. Step 2

Buy new or plan to use saved sprout or salad containers that are clear and have clear lids.

  3. Step 3

Place 1 to 3 tablespoons of seed into a mesh tea strainer ball.

  4. Step 4

Sanitize seeds and containers in a soak of one-part household bleach mixed with nine parts water. Let them soak for 20 minutes. Immediately rinse under cool, running tap water. Rinse the seed while still contained in the mesh strainer.

  5. Step 5

Place an absorbent, wet white paper towel on the bottom of the container. Spread 1 tablespoon of seed on the surface of the paper toweling. One tablespoon of seed spread on a five-by-five-inch area will produce a container full of sprouts.

  6. Step 6

Cover the container with a clear, ventilated lid.

  7. Step 7

Place the container under florescent lighting or near a window sill. A consistent 70- to 78-degree temperature is needed for successful germination.

  8. Step 8

Watch for the sprouts to start growing, and wait three to five days after they begin to grow before disturbing them.

  9. Step 9

Rinse sprouts and remove the seed coat hulls before eating.
