How to Get Skype on a PSP

Skype has proven to be enormously popular: millions of users taking advantage of the online phone service daily. In January of 2008, Sony released a firmware update for the PSP game system that enabled users to access Skype accounts on their PSPs. Skype's wireless communication services allow PSP users to transform their game systems into fully functioning phones capable of making free Skype-to-Skype calls as well as calls to land line or cell phones.

  • 2000 or 3000 Series PSP Lite, PSP Slim, or PSP Go Memory Stick Duo with at least 1MB of free memory PSP Headset or USB microphone if using a 2000 series PSP

Instructions

      Insert the Memory Stick Duo into the Memory Stick port on the side of the PSP. You will need at least 1 MB of free memory to use Skype.

      Use the directional pad to select the "Network" section of the XMB.

      Select the Skype icon with the "X" button. The Skype screen will load.

      Select "Sign In" if you wish to use an existing Skype account. Enter your username and password into the fields provided with the on-screen keyboard.

      Select "Create New Skype Account" if you wish to create a new account. Enter your desired username, password, and personal information into the fields provided with the on-screen keyboard.

      Select an available wireless connection. The PSP will connect to the Skype network and the Skype main menu will appear. If you receive a message saying that your desired username has been taken, enter a different one in the field provided.

      Connect a PSP headset or USB microphone to your PSP if you are using a 2000 series system. If you are using a 3000 series system or a PSP Go, use the system's internal microphone.

      Select "Contacts" from the Skype menu to see your list of contacts. To call a contact, select one with the directional pad and press the "X" button. To dial a number, choose "Dial" from the menu and enter the number with the on-screen keyboard. Select "My Profile" to alter your profile information or "Tools" to change your preferences or purchase Skype Credit.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not see the Skype icon under the Network heading, you may not have the newest firmware installed. Choose the "Settings" section of the XMB and select "System Update" to download the newest firmware.

  • Skype will not work with a 1000 series PSP. You will not be able to send or receive video chat over the PSP version of Skype.
