An airbrush is an object that uses compressed air to spray paint onto a surface. Airbrushing can be used to create designs on shirts, hats and wood, among other surfaces. You do not need to know how to draw or paint to airbrush. Using a stencil will help you create cool designs on surfaces that you would never think you could make. Airbrushing requires some practice, but once you get used to it you will realize how simple it really is.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what you want to airbrush. You will use different airbrushes for the type of object you want airbrushed. For example, if you choose to airbrush T-shirts, then you may want to start with the double-action siphon feed airbrush. For fingernail art you can use a single action airbrush. The siphon airbrush can hold different sizes of paint cups enabling you to easily and quickly change paints.

  2. Step 2

Decide which paint to use for airbrushing. For crafts or T-shirts use Createx water-based paint. Different surfaces require different brands of paint. Use auto air water-based paint for airbrushing hard surfaces such as wood.

  3. Step 3

Choose a compressor to use for the airbrush. There are a few to choose from such as diaphragm and piston-driven. The diaphragm uses a reciprocating diaphragm to push air through the airbrush and the piston-driven compressor uses an electric motor to push air through.

  4. Step 4

Stand several inches away from the object you are airbrushing. Move your arm side to side to get the airbrush moving. Push down on the paint trigger to start spraying the airbrush.

  5. Step 5

Spray the larger areas of the design first. Then work your way closer to the smaller details. For larger areas of the design, stand farther away so that the paint will spray out toward the design faster and easier. Stand closer for the smaller, more detailed areas of the design. Wait for the paint to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Airbrush in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear a face mask and goggles to help protect your eyes and mouth from the paint and its fumes.
