Things You'll Need:
- SLS-free shampoo Deep conditioner Shea butter Spray bottle Aloe vera juice Essential oil Glycerin Clear alcohol-free holding gel Detangling brush Boar bristle brush Wide tooth comb Silk head band
-
Step 1
Cleanse your scalp with a sodium laurel sulfate-free shampoo and rinse thoroughly. For afro hair, you want to avoid sodium laurel sulfate, which strips afro hair of its natural oils.
-
Step 2
Add a generous amount of deep conditioner throughout your hair. Allow the conditioner to remain on your hair for 30 minutes with a plastic cap covering your head. If possible, sit under a hooded hair dryer at the medium high setting; the heat helps the conditioner penetrate the hair shaft to soften the strands of hair.
-
Step 3
Rinse your hair thoroughly and blot dry with a towel.
-
Step 4
Take a spray bottle and add 1 cup of aloe vera juice, 2 tablespoons of glycerin, and 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil; peppermint and grapefruit are great for encouraging hair growth. Spritz your hair evenly.
-
Step 5
Detangle your hair with a detangling brush.
-
Step 6
Add the clear alcohol-free holding gel to your hairline and smooth firmly with the palm of your hand.
-
Step 7
Rub a generous amount of Shea butter into the palms of your hands to melt it for easier application. Massage the Shea butter throughout your hair, being sure to focus on the ends.
-
Step 8
Use a boar bristle brush and brush the hair straight back from the hairline.
-
Step 9
Place the silk head band onto your afro hair, use your fingers to lightly fluff your afro, and you have created a fun and trendy natural masterpiece.
