Instructions

    • 1

Begin by wetting the person's hair.

    • 2

Part hair on the top of the head where it naturally falls. If the person wears a side part, comb it that way. A person who naturally parts her hair in the center should have her hair combed that way.

    • 3

Comb a diagonal line from the peak of her forehead (where you have parted the hair) to the tip of the ear on one side.

    • 4

Hold all other hair in a clip so that you are only working with the section that you have combed.

    • 5

Comb the diagonal section toward the person's face with your dominant hand. Using your other hand, pull the section between your pointer and middle finger so that your fingers are upright.

    • 6

Shift your fingers down if you would like to do only subtle layering. Lift the section of hair slightly if you would like to add more noticeable layering.

    • 7

Open the shears slightly and slide the blade down the section. Move your fingers and the shears toward the person's chest as you are cutting. By shifting your fingers and shears downward, you will be sure to not cut into the length of the hair.

    • 8

Pull the section toward the person's face to check your work. Then, point-cut into the section to add more movement to the layers that you are creating.

    • 9

Let down another diagonal section of hair from the top of the person's head to just behind her hair. Then, clip the other hair out of the way. You should now have two separated sections.

    • 10

Comb the section that you have just let down along with the previous section together toward the person's face.

    • 11

Point cut into the longer pieces using the first section as your guide. Continue to separate diagonal sections and comb them toward the person's face, using the first section of hair as a guide.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not attempt to do this on yourself. It is far too difficult and you will most likely end up with a hairstyle you do not like. Attempt to layer hair in front ONLY if you have hairstyling experience, as it is a very difficult skill to learn.
