How to Dye Cotton Fabric

You can easily dye cotton fabric at home to match any color scheme you need. When you dye your own fabric, you can easily match upholstery, premade clothing patterns or even bedding. All you need is a sink or a large bucket to get started, and you can have your fabric dyed in no time at all.

  • 1 package of Rit fabric dye powder 3 gallons of hot water 2 cups of hot water 1 pound of white cotton fabric

      Pour three gallons of hot water into the sink or a large bucket.

      Place the fabric into the hot water and soak thoroughly. Then remove the fabric and squeeze out any excess water.

      Mix the dye powder with two cups of hot water, and pour the dye into the sink or bucket with the remaining hot water.

      Place the fabric back into the water, and stir it around for 30 minutes. Stir in an up and down motion to ensure the dye is equally distributed on the fabric.

      Rinse the fabric with warm water, and squeeze out any excess dye. Rinse again with cooler water until the water runs clear.

      Hang the fabric on the line to dry or place it in the dryer immediately on low heat.
