Women business leaders were once a rare breed, but with people like former CEOs Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina, of eBay and HP respectively, heading up male-dominant companies, that is no longer the case. These women business leaders have traits that other women aspiring to climb the corporate ladder or be successful in business would be wise to model.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take risks. The majority of small businesses are started by women. These women know that the majority of businesses are gone within five years, but take the plunge anyway. In corporate America women tend to take the right risks for the right reasons.

  2. Step 2

Take credit/responsibility for work. There is nothing worse than being overlooked for promotion because a person is too afraid to do the work and take credit for it regardless of the outcome. Some women tend to take the subservient role in the workplace, especially if there is a strong male leader on the team.

  3. Step 3

Define success on your own terms. A successful woman makes decisions based on what she wants to happen. She doesn't look at success as just a money count where he who has the most money wins. She looks at the whole picture of what being successful means, and measures her success according to that. It could be that relationships, spiritual life or health is more important than getting the accolades in corporate America.

  4. Step 4

Recognize your strengths, delegate the rest. Good women business leaders recognize that delegating weaknesses is a far more effective strategy than trying to fix them.

  5. Step 5

Trust your instincts. Leaders tend to go with their instincts over what something says on paper. If it does not feel right, she is prepared to walk away, or find out why she feels the way she does.

  6. Step 6

Build a supportive network. A leader is able to build a network around her to support her in her goals.

  7. Step 7

Mentor others. Women leaders are not threatened by others who want to model their success. They tend to mentor people officially and unofficially. They recognize they have had mentors along the way, so have no problem mentoring as well.
