How to Design Floral Embroidery

There are several types of embroidery that crafters enjoy working with. You will find regular embroidery, crewel work with yarns, and cross stitch. You can make your own floral designs for projects that you want to work yourself or to share with other crafters. You will need to be able to draw accurate floral art to design embroidery.

      Decide which type of embroidery you are designing each floral pattern for.

      Make a rough sketch of the floral design you want to make. Make a second, more detailed sketch with colors added in with the pencils on sketch paper.

      Copy the detailed sketch onto graph paper in pencil. Make notations of which type of stitch and colors the various parts of the flowers, stems and leaves will be done in. For instance, note that petals will be done in satin stitch.

      Use transfer pencil or paper to place the sketch onto the embroidery cloth.

      Write out instructions for the outline and stitching for the embroidery design.

      Make a detailed chart for the colors that will be needed for the design.
