How to Defragment NTFS

NTFS is the default filing system used by Microsoft Windows, and it's very vulnerable to fragmentation. This means files often become sporadically spread across a drive instead of being continuous. Defragmenting your hard drive can greatly increase efficiency and, as such, speed.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the defragmentation program. Click "Start," "Programs," "Accessories" and "Disc Defragmenter."

    • 2

      Select the NTFS disc or partition that needs to be defraged, then click "Defragment."

    • 3

      Wait for the job to finish. This might take a while depending on the size and speed of your hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • These instructions assume a Windows operating system. The default file systems for Macs and Linux systems are more modern, and as such not as susceptible to fragmentation as NTFS.

  • Turn off Bittorent or any large downloads before running disk defragmenter.
