Setting up a bar shelf for your home, whether it is a stylish lighted shelf behind your bar or just a serving cart is not difficult. The choices of alcohol and mixers are the most important elements of a well-stocked bar. It doesn't matter if your tastes run to top-shelf liquors and wine or if the budget dictates midprice ranges, a very nice bar shelf can be stocked. Follow the steps given here and you'll be all set to entertain a crowd or an intimate gathering.

    Stocking the Bar Shelf

Stock the alcohol section of the bar shelf with the following: Blended whiskey, bourbon, brandy, gin, rum, Scotch, sour mash whiskey, tequila, and vodka. These basics will cover simple drinks over the rocks or serve as the basis for mixed drinks and cocktails. Always have beer available. A few selections of the most popular brands is all that is necessary.

Purchase the following wines: Champagne, red, white, and sparkling. Refrigerate or chill Champagne and sparkling wines. Most red wines can be served either chilled or at room temperature. Wines such as white zinfandel or chardonnay are better chilled.

  5. Step 5

Add the following equipment to complete the stocking of the bar shelf: Blender, bottle opener, coasters, napkins, corkscrew, cutting board, stirrers, jigger, towels and a paring knife to prepare garnishes.
