There are different ways a file can be trashed when using a Mac computer that operates on OS X. A person using a Mac can drag the file or folder into the "Trash" file. Likewise, a person can trash a file by right clicking a file and choosing "Move to Trash." Items that are trashed can be removed as long as the "Trash" file is not emptied.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click on the "Trash" icon located in the dock. The dock is located across the bottom of the screen or vertically down the left or right side of the screen. Unlike other items in the dock, the "Trash" icon cannot be moved. It will always be the last icon in the dock.

  2. Step 2

Click on the first button on the top left next to the arrows after the page has opened. The first button has four small squares on it. Clicking this button makes all of the files in the "Trash" appear as thumbnails. A person who is looking for a file in the "Trash" that will be visually recognizable might want to use this button.

  3. Step 3

Select the next button to the right. This is the "list" button, and it places all of the files into a list that can be scrolled through.

  4. Step 4

Use the buttons under the word "Trash" to search in different ways. Select the "Name" button to search in alphabetical order. To find an item deleted on a specific date, select "Date Modified." If the file is very large or very small, click the "Size" button to list the trashed files in order of size.

  5. Step 5

Click on the third button at the top to view the trashed files in a list with small icons next to them. As each item is clicked on, a larger image of the document appears.

  6. Step 6

Click on the trashed file and drag it to the desktop after it has been found using one of the aforementioned methods. Repeat this for as many files as needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • To completely delete the items in the "Trash" file, select "Empty Trash" by right clicking in "Trash."
  • Emptying the "Trash" file will completely delete the files.
