It is common to see knitted sock patterns in magazines and craft books. If you crochet, it can be hard to find a pattern or learn how to crochet a nice warm pair of wool socks. Crocheted socks are relatively easy for an experienced crocheter. You can learn to crochet wool socks and follow a pattern found in a publication or on a yarn wrapper or a web site.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wool yarn
  • Pattern
  • Crochet hooks
  • Darning needle
  1. Step 1

Choose a crocheted sock pattern and yarn in the amount the directions instruct.

  2. Step 2

Start by following pattern directions for the sock cuff. Be sure to keep an accurate count for each row that you crochet.

  3. Step 3

Crochet several rows and measure to be sure that the size is true to the pattern directions. The width of the cuff for the pattern in the reference below is three inches.

  4. Step 4

Finish the cuff section and lay it out flat to check that it is even.

  5. Step 5

Turn the cuff and begin to crochet the foot. Pay attention that you stitch into each stitch around the cuff.

  6. Step 6

Your pattern directions may ask you to switch to a larger crochet hook. Be sure to check your gauge which is the length in inches per set of counted stitches listed on your pattern. Continue forward with the leg of the sock.

  7. Step 7

Insert hook through the base of two stitches to decrease to shape the toe area of the top of the foot.

  8. Step 8

Notice the shaping of the toe area.

  9. Step 9

Make two single crochets in the first single crochet at the beginning of the row. Make one single crochet in each single crochet stitch down the entire row. Make two single crochet stitches in the last single crochet stitch of the row. This is an increase in stitches. Increase stitches every other row as directed.

  10. Step 10

Finish crocheting the bottom of the foot as directed by the pattern and fasten off the yarn. Lay the sock body out on a clean work surface. Thread a darning needle with a twenty inch piece of yarn. Double the yarn and knot the end. Sew the sock together according to the pattern directions.

Tips & Warnings
  • The most important thing for you to remember when crocheting socks is to count your stitches for each and every row.
