A DLT (Digital Linear Tape) drive is a technology for storing data through the use of magnetic tape. It was first developed in 1984; new versions have been released as recently as 2005. Under careful storage, data on a DLT can last more than 30 years, but they can be damaged easily. Occasionally, a DLT's read/write heads will need a cleaning. Specific cleaning cartridges are available and are easy to use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Inspect your cleaning cartridge to make certain it is not damaged. Turn your DLT system on.

  2. Step 2

If "Use Cleaning Tape" is turned on, wait until the "Operate Handle" light comes on. Then, pull the handle up and open. With the front side label slot facing out, insert the cleaning cartridge fully into the drive. You should encounter a stop.

  3. Step 3

Push the handle closed. The "Tape in Use" light will blink as it loads, and then turn solid as the cleaning begins. When the "Use Cleaning Tape" light turns off, the cleaning cycle is complete. Wait for the "Operate Handle" light again, and open the handle.

  4. Step 4

Remove the cleaning cartridge and close the handle again. The front side label of the cartridge should have instructions for maintaining and storing the cartridge after a cleaning.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the "Use Cleaning Tape" light does not shut off, your cleaning cartridge must be replaced, and the process must be repeated.
  • Be gentle with the cleaning cartridge. It can be damaged if dropped or hit. Labels on the cartridge should go only on the front side slot. Store the cleaning cartridge in its plastic container and not in direct sunlight.
