Ace the Verbal Section of GRE

Are you planning on taking GRE in the near future? GRE Verbal is something you can ace if you put some time into preparing. Even if your score on SAT Verbal wasn't stellar years ago, don't let it scare you from studying for GRE Verbal. Here's how to crack it ON YOUR OWN.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1
Barron's How to Prepare for the Gre Graduate Record Examination
Barron's How to Prepare for the Gre Graduate Record Examination

Get Barron's How to Prepare for the Gre Graduate Record Examination. Get familiarized with The GRE High-Frequency Word list (333 words). Next go through the 3,500-word master word list twice in the next two months. Make flash cards for the words you find hard to memorize. Carry these cards around everywhere so you can be familiarized with these hard-to-memorize words.

  2. Step 2

Make good use of Supervoca website (www.supervoca.com) to practice whenever you feel bored to go through the 3,500-word master word list.

  3. Step 3
    ETS PowerPrep
    ETS PowerPrep

After you're done going through Barron's master word list twice, sign up for real GRE test (ets.org). When you sign up, they will mail you a copy of PowerPrep CD. PowerPrep contains some sample problems + 2 full-length GRE tests. Take these GRE tests as many times as possible.

  4. Step 4
    ETS BigBook
    ETS BigBook

If you feel like you need more practice tests, use the Big Book (published by ETS and contains 27 full-length paper-based GRE tests). You can easily get an electronic version of it on TestMagic forum.

  5. Step 5

Now you should feel really confident about taking the Verbal section in a real setting. Get plenty of sleep the night before.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to get familiarized with the actual GRE verbal questions. This is also a good way to keep yourself motivated to go through the gigantic 3,500 word list. More problems will help you realize the importance of memorizing these GRE vocabularies.
