A big part of replacing an old roof is deciding which material to use for your new roof. Here are some steps to take in order to help decide which roofing material is most appropriate for your house.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider temperature of the area in which you live to help you choose a roofing material. Asphalt roofing is very durable in temperature that run in the extremes. They also tend to be priced fairly cheap.

  2. Step 2

When you are choosing a roofing material, think of how you might be able to make your home more energy efficient by choosing a green option. Wood shakes tend to keep heat from the house in better than other roofing materials. While this is an attractive roofing option, it tends to not be as durable.

  3. Step 3

If pests and insects are a problem where you live, consider tile roofing. Tile roofing is expensive and the actual tiles are rather easy to break, but it is otherwise a durable roofing option.

  4. Step 4

If you are looking for a hassle free, energy efficient option, consider metal roofing. Metal roofing is expensive but once you have it installed you likely wont have to worry about it again for a very long time. Metal roofing stands up in extreme weather and are extremely durable.
