When heading out to teach your first yoga class, you may be wondering how you are going to help all those students relax when you are feeling so nervous. With the preparation lined out in the steps below, you can make teaching your first yoga class an event to celebrate (even before you've taught it).

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Write down an outline of what you will teach for your first yoga class. Yes, you will bring this cheat sheet with you - and maybe even use it. The great thing is that even seasoned yoga instructors break out notes sometimes - so don't feel self-conscious about using yours.

  2. Step 2

Teach to your friends, family and yourself. Technically, when you go to teach your first yoga class, it won't really be the first time you've taught your sequence because you'll practice on some friendly faces first.

  3. Step 3

Get your yoga accessories prepared. Figure out what you will wear the night before so you don't have to think about it right before you teach your yoga class. If you are planning to use music, then have that picked out and try to practice your sequence with it a couple times. Clean your yoga mat and have everything ready to go. Feeling prepared will take away some of the butterflies.

  4. Step 4

Don't reveal your newness or that you feel insecure about teaching your first yoga class to your students. Apologizing to your students or letting on that you are nervous will only make them concerned about whether or not they can trust your instruction. Save your venting for loved ones so your yoga students can enjoy their practice.

  5. Step 5

Take advantage of your opening meditation. As you guide your students into the present moment with breath and a little guided imagery, or with passages from inspirational texts, let your own spirit be soothed. Breathe along with them. Don't be afraid to be silent for a minute or two (many students like quiet in between the cues and instruction anyway).

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that your students came to your yoga class so that they could relax and be in the present moment. They are not their to judge you! This mindset should help
