Because we are humans, eventually workplace conflicts will arise. As employees and business partners get angry at each other, it directly hurts the business as a whole. Resolving conflict in the workplace should be done in a timely and civilized manner and in a way that keeps them from happening again. As managers enter the business world they quickly realize that politics are everywhere and workplace management is just something we have to deal with.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, make sure to deal with workplace conflict in private because public conflict affects how people react. Studies show that resolving workplace conflict is easier in private because parties involved make better and more rational decisions.

  2. Step 2

If you are acting as a mediator, make sure to hear all sides of the story. People will feel like they are being treated unfairly if they don't get their story out. There are always 2 sides to a story and the truth.

  3. Step 3

Dig through people's emotions and speech to try and find the real reason for conflict. What is the real issue and how can we resolve that so both parties compromise.

  4. Step 4

In the end, peace will be achieved if you meet the conflict in the middle somewhere. Resolving conflict in the workplace is about a compromise and not a winner and loser. If someone feels like they lost, there will be more conflict.

  5. Step 5

Try to be logical and don't take sides as a mediator of employee or business conflict.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't make a choice too early, emotions take time to settle down.
  • For sexual harassment, take care of your company's image as well.
