Instructions

    • 1

File your California unemployment claim using one of three methods. You can file online at Access eApply4UI, file by phone at 1-866-333-4606 or download and file a paper claim. The paper claim can be faxed or mailed to the address on the EDD website.

Watch the mail for the documents the California EDD will send you: DE 1275A, A Guide to Benefit and Employment Services; DE 4581, Continued Claim Form; DE 429Z, Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award; DE 1101CLMT, Notice of Unemployment Insurance Claim and DE 2456, the CalJOBS brochure.

Wait for a phone interview. This could take as long as a month, hopefully shorter, but you should receive a letter in the mail stating the appointment time. When they call they will ask you how you lost your job. Were you fired? Laid off? Why? Provide accurate and honest information as the department will follow up with your former employer.

Submit the Continued Claim Form after you receive your first payment, if you are approved. This form will be submitted every two weeks and will verify that you have met all requirements to continue benefits.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to the California EDD, filing online is the fastest, though you may want to follow up with a phone call.

  • When you are laid off, California law requires your employer to provide you with a booklet, For Your Benefit - California's Programs for the Unemployed.

  • Also, if you're going to be taking training or starting school, be careful about notifying EDD on your forms because your check can be delayed up to a month while they schedule a phone interview and verify whether your training facility qualifies for EDD funds. Try to keep some money in savings as a cushion in case of any delay of payment.
