Straighten Hair That Is Fine and Curly

Do you like to straighten your fine, curly hair but worry that you're damaging it? Or, when you straighten your hair, does it lack body and volume? If so, there are a few simple styling tricks you can use to get sleek, straight hair while adding volume and avoiding damage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ceramic flat iron
  • Blow dryer
  • Wide-tooth comb
  • Brush
  • Straightening hair product
  • Root lifting spray
  • Hair clip
  1. Step 1

Wash your hair and follow with a moisturizing conditioner. Gently squeeze your hair with a towel to remove excess water.

  2. Step 2

Rub a small amount of straightening cream, serum, or mousse between your hands and evenly apply it to your hair, but avoid the roots. Then apply a root lifting spray to your roots. Comb the products through your hair using a wide-tooth comb. Start combing the ends and gradually work your way up to the roots to avoid breakage. Plug in your ceramic flat iron.

  3. Step 3

Blow-dry your hair with your head upside down. Keep your blow dryer on low heat. Brush your hair as you're blow-drying it. Continue until your curly hair is almost dry. Then, flip your head back and finish drying it.

  4. Step 4

Clip all of your hair up except for the underneath layer. Grab a one-inch section of the underneath layer and quickly run it through your flat iron from the roots to the ends. Repeat if necessary, but avoid leaving your flat iron on a section of hair for too long, as this will cause damage. After you've finished the underneath layer, release more hair from the clip and continue straightening your hair section by section from the underneath to the top.

  5. Step 5

Once all of your hair is straight, apply a finishing cream, serum, or pomade to prevent frizz. Avoid applying the product to your roots, as this will flatten your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • If possible, only wash your hair a couple of times a week. Washing it everyday can strip your curly hair of natural oils, which can make it drier.
  • One-inch ceramic flat irons tend to be the easiest to work with.
  • Use a deep conditioner once a week to help keep your fine hair healthy.
  • Always remember to unplug your flat iron after using it.
