How to Use Captopril
Captopril is a prescription medication used to control high blood pressure and some types of heart failure. The medication works by relaxing blood vessels, which allows an increased amount of blood flow to be pumped to and from the heart.

Take each prescribed dose of Captopril on an empty stomach, either one hour before eating or two hours after eating. Ask your doctor about taking Captopril with food if upset stomach occurs from taking the medication.

Drink one full 8 oz. glass of water with each dose of Captopril.

Drink at least 6 8 oz. glasses of water or other liquids a day to prevent dehydration while taking Captopril. Water, clear fluids and juices are good drinks for hydration.

Decide whether to take a missed dose or skip it. Generally, a missed dose should be taken if you remember it within two hours of your scheduled dose. If more than two hours has passed from your scheduled time to take Captopril, skip the dose.

Tips & Warnings
Store Captopril at room temperature with the lid tightly sealed on the container. Keep Captopril away from humidity and moisture. Your doctor will regularly check your blood pressure and adjust your prescribed dosage of Captopril if necessary. Captopril can cause side effects. Common side effects include a metal taste in your mouth, dizziness, tiredness, sore throat, bruising, fast heartbeat and sores in the mouth. If the side effects are especially bothersome or do not disappear after taking Captopril for a few weeks, talk to your doctor.
Captopril can cause birth defects. Talk to your doctor before taking Captopril if you are pregnant, become pregnant, plan to get pregnant or are breastfeeding. Inform your doctor of all medications that you are taking and of all medical conditions before taking Captopril. Tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Captopril before undergoing any type of surgery. Stop taking Captopril and call 911 if you experience facial swelling, swelling of the limbs, chest pain, or a severe rash or you faint.
