How to Find a Bead Store

How to Find a Bead Store thumbnail
Beads and more can be found at your local bead store

Beading has become a popular hobby over the last several years. Not just for jewelry makers any longer, beads are being used in a variety of crafts and art forms. From bead weaving to beaded embroidery, beads of all shapes, sizes and colors can be found almost anywhere. However, the finicky beader will know that the best selection comes from the local bead store. There is nothing better than actually handling the beads you will be using in your project.

Instructions

    • 1

Search the phone book. Many times a bead store will actually have the word "beads" in their store name. A search in the business section of your local phone directory under "craft supplies" or "hobby shop" may produce a partial list of bead stores in your area. Also, your local craft and hobby store may have departments devoted to beads.

Search listings for for specialties. Many bead stores specialize in certain beads or crystals. For example, a store specializing in primitive looking beads may be called "Primitive Beads," while a store specializing in Swarovski crystals may be called "Crystals Galore."

Search online directories. There are several international and local bead store directories available online. BeadShopFinder.com allows you to enter your city, state or country and will provide you with a list of the bead stores in your area. The same is true of the Local Bead Alliance website. Note that many times these sites are populated by the stores themselves and may not provide a complete list of the stores in your area.

Join a bead club. Beading buddies are one of the best ways to find a good bead store in your area. They may be able to tell you about prices, stock and even classes offered. Start at your local craft store and ask a clerk if there are any bead clubs in your area. You could also try online beading blogs to locate people in your area who work with beads. Another great place to meet others interested in beading is at local art/craft shows. Striking up a conversation with a local artisan can provide you with much needed information on beading supplies in your area.
