The pounding on the door startles you and you are surprised to discover it is your teenager making the ruckus. "I lost my key," he shrugs before the question can form in your mouth. "If I knew where, it wouldn't be lost," he reads your mind again. "Locksmiths are expensive," you mutter more to yourself than the disappearing teen. You won't leave your home vulnerable; so you decide to replace the locks yourself. It's a simple job you can easily complete in less than an hour.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Home door lock kit Phillips screwdriver Flathead screwdriver Pencil Chisel Heavy duty gloves Safety glasses or goggles
  1. Step 1

Write down the model and brand of your current home locks. Take the information with you to purchase replacement locks. Buying a different brand or model may require the door be re-drilled for the lock to line up and operate properly.

  2. Step 2

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the lock to the door and pull the front and back pieces of the lock apart. Remove the screws from the latch plate and pry it off the door with the flathead screw driver. Slide a screw driver through the latch mechanism still in the door; use it to carefully push the assembly out of the door.

  3. Step 3

Insert the new latch mechanism, align the plate and clearly mark its position with a pencil. The latch plate must be positioned flush with the door for the lock to operate properly. Take out the mechanism and use your chisel to cut a 1/16 inch bed for the latch plate. Reinsert the latch assembly and screw the plate in place.

  4. Step 4

Slide the screws through the new lock and into the latch mechanism; align the other side of the lock to fit. Tighten in place with the screwdriver.

  5. Step 5

Pry the old strike place off the door frame with a screwdriver after removing the screws. Place the new strike plate and screw it in place. Close the door and use the key to ensure the lock operates correctly. Repeat the process to replace the rest of your home locks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Protect yourself from cuts and puncture wounds; always wear heavy duty gloves when working with sharp tools. Sawdust and wood splinters can cause permanent eye damage; wear safety glasses or goggles and guard your sight.
