The Internet is opening up many business opportunities for entrepreneurs who would like to run a simple business from their home. Starting and running a greeting card website is easy to set up and only requires little start-up capital. You can have your site up and running in less than a day. With the right tools and information, creating a card website takes little technical skill and know-how. It is a good thing to know something about the PHP and SQL programming language, but it is not always necessary.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Domain name Hosting package PHP e-Card script
  1. Step 1

Purchase a domain name. The first thing that needs to be done is the purchase of a domain name. Think of a domain name that is simple to remember and catchy. You also want a name that goes with your business name. For example, if the name of your site will be Express E-Cards, try to find a domain name that is something like www.expressecards.com. It will be easier for your potential and returning customers to find the site. If the name you want is taken, be creative and use other extensions like .net, .biz or .us.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a hosting package. To start off, you do not need an expensive package with lots of space. Unless you are projecting a lot of traffic in your first couple of months, you can get away with just using the basic package for now. Many hosting companies allow you to upgrade at any time, so you can always gear your hosting package to the traffic you are generating at the time. Make sure that the hosting package that you use have PHP enabled and offer databases and a control panel.

Depending on the PHP script and the amount of card templates you want to initially carry, you may need more space than the basic package provides. If you don't have a clear plan, try purchasing the script first and then the hosting package. Some e-card scripts have over 10,000 templates to use and allow you to create your own.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a PHP script. If you know how to program PHP, this is great. But, there are pre-made PHP scripts just for card websites. Some of the good ones are CardFountain Greeting, WebCards and eCardMax 2008. These scripts are not expensive; they cost around $50.

  4. Step 4

Install your PHP card script. The installation instructions are included with your purchased script. You will need to upload the files to your web server. Do this in your control panel's File Manager. Once all of the files have been uploaded, you will be required to direct your browser to an installation file. The installation process will get the basic information from you and completely install the script, including setting up your databases.

  5. Step 5

Customize your site. There will be an administration area that comes with your e-card script. Customize the graphics, colors and wording on your site.

  6. Step 6

Customize your cards. Each e-card script allows you to customize their pre-made templates and even make your own. Design your cards and write the text inside. If you are going to offer the customers to customize their own cards, make sure you turn this feature on in the administration area.

  7. Step 7

Test your site. Go through your site as if you are a customer to experience first hand what each visitor will when they visit your site. You want to make sure that everything works and that it looks the way you want it to before you go live.

  8. Step 8

Market your site. To get customers, you will need to let the world know that you are open for business. There are paid ways you can do this by hiring a marketing firm or buying some type of website advertising package. Some of the free or low-cost ways to market your site is to send out press releases, post in forums and message boards, or to write articles about your business. Depending on your budget and time restraints, choose the one that is best for your business.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are lots of e-card sites that are already functional on the web. A good way to make yours stand out from the rest is by having a gimmick. Have a site of humorous or satire cards. If you are an artist, create your own cartoon characters for your site. These are just some suggestions for making your site stand out.
