The Avent breast pump was designed with moms in mind. It is different from the old pumps that were painful to use. Unlike older pumps, this model imitates the sucking of a baby. The Avent pump is gentle, comfortable and silent, so you can use it discretely anywhere.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your nipples to make sure that there is no blockage. Wash the area and your hands.

  2. Step 2

Assemble and sterilize the breast pump (see Resources).

  3. Step 3

Place a drink nearby so you have some refreshments while you are performing the extraction of milk. Sit in a comfortable chair that allows you to lean forward slightly.

  4. Step 4

Place the pump petal massager and funnel firmly against your breast so that no air will leak out of the funnel. If there is an air leak, you will have no suction.

  5. Step 5

Press down on the handle until you feel the suction. Press the handle down to the point where you still feel comfortable; you do not have to push it down all the way.

  6. Step 6

Watch to make sure the milk flows into the bottle, and does not sit in the body of the pump. As the milk flows, hold the vacuum for about two to three seconds and let the handle move back to its resting position after it has completed each stroke.

  7. Step 7

Pump your milk for about ten minutes while using the massager petal.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some women prefer not to use the petal massager, but it makes the milk flow faster as it flexes in and out. Store milk for only 24 hours in a refrigerator, or up to three months in the freezer.
