Nonprofit organizations support a wide variety of causes that rely, almost entirely, on donations. Many companies and individuals assist nonprofit organizations by providing financial and other types of contributions. However, most people who work for and raise money for nonprofits understand that action must be taken to ensure regular donations.

    Raise Donations for a NonProfit

  1. Step 1

Create a case statement. According to Entrepreneur.com, a case statement is a written document that describes to prospective donors how their donations will be used and how the donation will positively impact the community or cause. A few things to include in the case statement are the goal of the organization, anticipated results, accomplishments achieved by the nonprofit and history of the establishment.

  2. Step 2

Search for grants. One of the most effective ways to raise money for a nonprofit is to request grants from the government or specific companies. Look into specific grants that the government provides at USA.gov to see if your nonprofit qualifies. Additionally, research grants offered by companies such as the Florida based Quantum Foundation, which offer grants to nonprofit organizations.

  3. Step 3

Use mailers to solicit donations. Several types of mail can be useful when securing funds for a nonprofit organization. Send direct mail and e-mail requests to individuals and companies. Research companies that often give charitable donations or businesses that might benefit from donating to you organization. For instance, if you are raising money for a local animal shelter, request donations from nearby vet clinics, pet stores and similar establishments.

  4. Step 4

Host events to raise money. Many nonprofits hold events to raise donations for their cause. For instance, the organization Global Partnerships raised $560,000 during its annual Business of Hope Luncheon. Different event ideas might include formal dinners, golf tournaments and even carnivals.

  5. Step 5

Get involved with social media. Social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and many others can help nonprofit organizations increase their exposure and solicit donations. This allows the nonprofit to open communication with younger activists and inform them of your cause. Not only does this increase the chances for individual donations, but also it provides a free way to communicate upcoming events and other information.

  6. Step 6

Offer online contests. Online contests can be a great way to raise money and allow people to participate in your organization's goals. For example, a nonprofit designed to teach literacy might host an online short story contest. Individuals could pay a contest fee, submit a story and then potentially win a prize. To reduce costs to the nonprofit, prize donations from local companies could be requested for the contest.
