Your wedding ring is one of the most sacred of symbols as it represents your wedding vows to each other. It is the single piece of jewelry that you will likely wear each day for many, many years. Therefore, choosing the perfect ring can be a daunting, seemingly impossible task. If you want something special that no one else will have, designing your own wedding ring may be the best option.

How to Design Your Wedding Ring

  1. Step 1

Get ideas from jewelry Websites and bridal magazines. This may be the best way to get a good idea of the style of ring you prefer. It's important to know if your tastes trends towards larger rocks, antique-style settings, simple rings or something more modern. Your personal style should shine in your ring, as that is the whole point of designing it yourself.

  2. Step 2

Decide on the metal(s) you'd like to use. When doing this, it's important to keep your budget in mind. Choose platinum for the toughest metal, which is also hypoallergenic. If platinum is a bit out of your budget, you can opt for white gold or sterling silver for a similar look. Of course, yellow gold is another timeless option and remember that combining the looks of two metals together creates another look entirely.

  3. Step 3

Sketch a design of your dream wedding ring. Perhaps you'd like some sort of design to be etched into the band to symbolize you, your spouse, or your life together. Decide on the width and thickness of the band.

Figure out the number and type of stones you want to highlight in your ring. Some brides choose precious stones (other than diamonds), while others may combine two or more types of stones in their ring. Sketch out the size, style, shape, and arrangement you'd like the stones to have. Keep in mind it is possible to add stones from older pieces or have the metal melted down and incorporate that into your ring.

  5. Step 5

Find a reputable jeweler that offers custom jewelry. Before making your appointment, look over your final budget and be sure you are comfortable with it. Once you sit down with the jeweler, don't let him talk you into something you can't afford. Your ring should make you smile each time you look at it, not worry about how to make the payment on it. You might also consider using an online jewelry store that has a "design your own ring" component to avoid the sales pressure.

Tips & Warnings
  • Research the four "C's" of diamonds to be sure the diamonds you are receiving are top quality. It is possible to save money on a custom ring by contacting someone you know who makes jewelry, or putting up fliers at local art schools.
