Things You'll Need:
- Color Peroxide Gray Magic Plastic cap Plastic Gloves Towel Color bottle/bowl/brush Dryer
-
Step 1
Choose a permanent color that is neutral. If you want more gold or ashy tones, mix this with a neutral base. Neutral colors cover better than golden, ashy or red tones. Demi and semi permanent colors do not cover gray. Only add 1/4 ounce of gold, ash or red tones to 2 ounces of color product.
-
Step 2
Apply peroxide first when attempting to color hair that is resistant to color, such as gray hair. Put desired 2 to 4 ounces of 10-volume peroxide in a bottle and apply to the whole head. Comb through and be sure to saturate the hair completely. Leave on for 10 to 20 minutes. This will soften the cuticle and allow for more color penetration.
-
Step 3
Section the hair into four quadrants. Use a rat-tail comb to part hair directly down the middle from forehead to nape. Then section a part from the middle to over the ear on each side of the head. Secure each section with a butterfly clip.
-
Step 4
Mix permanent color in a color bowl with a color applicator brush for cream color. Use a color bottle to apply liquid color. Mix until the peroxide and color form a creamy consistency. Add 15 to 20 Gray Magic drops to increase the strength of the mixture. You might try a color specifically formulated for gray hair such as L-Oreal Creme Resistant Gray.
-
Step 5
Put on plastic gloves and begin application at the nape of the neck by taking quarter-inch sections and applying color from root to ends, making sure to saturate the gray hair completely. When all sections are complete, cover in a plastic cap and apply heat for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, remove the plastic cap and heat. Leave on the hair for up to 45 minutes for full coverage.
