How to Draw a Diamond

Diamonds, as Marilyn Monroe once sang, are a girl's best friend. These precious stones, made of compressed carbon, are mined and then brought to a jeweler, who cuts them, forming the diamonds into heart, round and cone shapes. By studying the essential shape of the cuts in a diamond, and the points where a diamond reflects the light and colors around it, a drawing of a diamond becomes clear.

Instructions

  1. Drawing the Shape of the Diamond

    • 1

Draw a hexagon in silver pencil. A hexagon has six even sides.

    • 2

Divide the hexagon into six even triangles.

    • 3

Extend one of the triangles beyond the original hexagon. Continue the straight lines from the triangle so you have a larger equilateral triangle.

    • 4

Continue the outside lines of the two triangles on either side of the one you extended. There will be two small triangles and one trapezoid formed within the extension of the triangle.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 around the rest of the hexagon until you've created a single, larger hexagon, with many smaller triangles and trapezoids dividing up its interior.

    • 6

Continue all the trapezoids beyond the shape you drew, so they form triangular shapes. When you're finished, there will be six triangle tips added onto six trapezoids.

    • 7

Connect all the extended tips you drew in Step 6, forming a circle.

Shade and Reflection in the Diamond

    • 8

Look at the image of a diamond in the Resources section. Color in the darkest parts with your blue pencil.

    • 9

Look at the diamond image again, and study the lighter shadows and reflection marks in the diamond. Shade in these points in silver. All the marks are angular, reflecting the triangular and trapezoidal cuts in the diamond.

    • 10

Add any other details to your diamond drawing that you'd like, such as a band for a wedding ring.
