Increasing the weight of your unborn baby helps to ensure a healthy delivery and to prevent health complications for your child. It can be a challenge, though, especially if you do not wish to gain excessive weight yourself. Healthy weight gain is the best option for increasing fetal weight.
Increase your calorie intake slowly, until you are taking in approximately 300 additional calories a day. This could be in the form of fruit juice, healthy snacks or larger meal portions. Do not overload yourself with food that is unhealthy in order to increase fetal weight.
Take your prenatal vitamin every day. You need to supply your body with twice as many vitamins and minerals as you did pre-pregnancy. If your body is healthy, your baby is most likely healthy as well. Folic acid should be taken as an additional supplement if it is not included in your prenatal vitamin.
Drink 2 percent milk daily. Milk is a healthy snack for you and your baby. You want to focus on snacks that will increase fetal weight, but will not cause you to gain excessive weight.
Eat when you feel hungry. Do not skip meals while you are pregnant. Your baby relies completely on you for nutrition, and you will feel weak if you do not eat enough. Carry a bottle of water or juice with you at all times to prevent feeling weak.
