A custom fabric cover not only dresses up a plain scrapbook but it also protects it. You can make this scrapbook cover in less than thirty minutes with very few supplies and little expertise. It is a good project for novice sewers and it is so easy that you may want to make a cover for all your scrapbooks. The key to the project is the type of fabric you choose. A fabric that is sturdy and somewhat stiff provides the best results.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sturdy fabric (upholstery fabric is ideal) Scissors Measuring tape Chalk or tailor's pencil Sewing machine Matching thread Straight pins
  1. Step 1

Set the fabric on a flat work area facing downward so that the unprinted side is visible. Place the open scrapbook on top of the fabric.

  2. Step 2

Use your marking tool to trace the scrapbook silhouette onto the fabric. Put away the scrapbook. Add an extra 5 inches to the right and left sides of the tracing and 1 inch to the top and bottom. Mark these measurements with your chalk or tailor's pencil.

  3. Step 3

Cut on the outlines to create one large square of fabric. Make sure not to erase your lines while you cut.

  4. Step 4

Position the fabric on your work area so that the printed side is face down and the unprinted side is facing you.

  5. Step 5

Hem all of the edges by folding half an inch of the fabric and then folding that edge over half an inch. Pin the fold into place and sew the hem down with a running stitch.

  6. Step 6

Find the right and left sides of the fabric by looking for the tracing of the scrapbook. Fold the fabric over so that 4 inches of the fabric is folded over and pin it down.

  7. Step 7

Use a running stitch to sew the sides of the folded fabric to create a pocket. Remember to take out the pins.

  8. Step 8

Use the fabric cover by slipping the scrapbooks cover into the pockets.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can adjust the size of the pockets by adding or subtracting inches to the measurements. Larger pockets stay on better, but you may need shallower pockets for scrapbooks that aren't very wide. If you wish for a more constructed appearance, starch and iron the fabric before you start.
  • Don't use flimsy or delicate fabric such as silk.
