      Ensure that you are a U.S. citizen between the ages of 17 and 40. If you are 17, you have to gain written consent from a parent or legal guardian. You also must have a high school diploma or GED.

      Participate in a daily exercise regimen to ensure that you are physically fit and prepared mentally for the challenges that lie ahead.

      Contact a local U.S. Army recruiter to express your desire to join the Army. See "Resources" to locate the Army recruiting station nearest to you. You also can complete an application online. If you complete an application online, the application will be referred to an Army recruiter, who will make contact with you regarding your application.

      Take the ASVAB test to determine what Army career best suits your strengths and abilities. The ASVAB is not a pass or fail test, but you must score at least a 31 in order to enlist in the Army. The ASVAB results will help determine what specialty area you should be assigned to upon enlistment.

      Visit the MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) to take your physical examination. You will also select your field of work while at the MEPS and be sworn in as an official soldier.

      Attend and complete nine weeks of basic combat training. Your recruiter will let you know when your training is scheduled to begin.
