Use Forceps

Forceps are used by both hospital staff and hobbyists. Hospitals use forceps for various types of surgery, from biopsies to suturing a wound. Medical forceps are made of disposable plastic or reusable stainless steel. Stainless steel forceps can be sterilized over and over. Model builders and other types of hobbyists can use forceps to piece together small models and other tiny objects.

Instructions

    • 1

Chose the correct forceps for the project. Among the types available are splinter forceps, sponge forceps, dressing forceps, cushing forceps, wire-cutting forceps and suture sundries forceps. Forceps also come in a variety of styles, such as tweezers, tongs, clams, and clips.

    • 2

Grasp the forceps. Forceps usually have two holes at the end to allow a thumb and either the middle finger or index finger to slip through.

    • 3

Clamp onto the object that you want to pick up.

    • 4

Lock the forceps if you are using a locking type. Locking forceps are commonly used to clamp an object, such as a suture, in place. Pressing the locking forceps together will engage small teeth at the clamping end to lock the forceps shut. To unlock them, slightly twist the forceps to release the lock.
