Decide whether you want to change the carpet. If your present carpet matches the new teen bedroom color, then you can keep what you already have. If you have hardwood floors, you could consider getting throw rugs to give the room more color and to make it more lively.

Consider the existing furnishings. If the furniture you have is in good shape, you could use it and buy a few pieces that will enhance the decor of the bedroom. However, if the furniture is old and worn, it may be time to get some new pieces. When deciding on the furniture, you will need to keep in mind what ideas your child had and whether or not the bedroom is too big or too small for the furniture you purchase. In a smaller room, you will find that a bed, nightstand, dresser and desk are enough to make a great bedroom.

Help your child choose the right accents for their room. You can add new linens for the bed, window treatments, and paintings that will match the overall color pattern of the room. Add lamps, chairs, pillows and a phone to give the room character. Your child's ideas for this bedroom will give it the look and feel he or she desires while allowing you to have the home you want.

Tips & Warnings
If your budget does not include furniture, remember painting and stenciling can give old furniture new life. Animal prints, oddly shaped furniture and lamps, and bean bag chairs can give the bedroom more personality.
When painting keep in mind that dark wall paint may be hard to change later. Using neutral colors will allow your teen to redecorate easily later. Chances are the new decor will match the paint and save you money on buying products to get rid of a particularly dark paint.
