Changing your hair color can give you a whole new style. People with darker hair color may notice that it can be somewhat difficult to change the color of their hair. In order to take your hair from a dark brown or black to red, you will need to lighten it first. By lightening your dark hair before dyeing it, you will ensure that your final product will be the vibrant red color that you would like.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 hair dye bowls 2 hair dye brushes Powder hair bleach Volume 20 hair color developer Red hair dye of your choice 2 pairs of latex gloves
  1. Step 1

With gloves on your hands, mix equal parts of the bleach and hair color developer in one of your bowls. Mix to a smooth consistency, thick enough that it will not drip but thin enough that there are no lumps of powder bleach.

  2. Step 2

Use the tail end of your hair color brush to work with thin sections of your hair and distribute the bleach mixture throughout your hair. Make sure that each strand is covered completely.

  3. Step 3

Let the bleach mixture sit about 20 minutes until your hair is lightened to a yellow-brown color.

  4. Step 4

Rinse and shampoo the mixture from your hair until all of the bleach is removed.

  5. Step 5

Towel dry your hair so that it is still damp.

  6. Step 6

Put a different pair of latex gloves on your hands. Mix equal parts of the red hair dye and hair color developer with your second bowl and brush. Mix it to a smooth consistency.

  7. Step 7

Use the tail end of your hair color brush to work with thin sections of your hair and distribute the color evenly. Work the color throughout your hair with your hands to make sure that your hair is saturated with the hair dye.

  8. Step 8

Let the hair dye sit on your hair for 20 minutes.

  9. Step 9

Rinse, shampoo and condition your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cover your bed pillow with a towel for the first 2 or 3 nights after you dye your hair. The color can bleed onto fabric. To maintain the vibrancy of your red hair, you might want to use a red-tinted color shampoo and color conditioner.
  • Do not wash your hair for 2 or 3 days after you dye to maintain the vibrancy.
