Reiki is healing energy that facilitates balance, healing and personal insight. Many reiki practitioners are inspired to share their reiki energy and training by setting up a practice or a business. Reiki practitioners and teachers impart their love and supportive philosophy through classes and therapy sessions. Setting up a formal business or practice for reiki is relatively easy to accomplish for an experienced Reiki Master or practitioner; it just involves paperwork and preparation to meet requirements of your state and locale, as well as your customers (clients and students).

Instructions

    Business Basics

  1. Step 1

Identify the requirements for your state, county and city for a personal care business. Generally, massage therapists, nurses and clergy are recognized to provide healing services. Consider getting an adjunct certification in those areas for minimal coverage. You may need to set up a business name and apply for a business license.

  2. Step 2

Prepare basic customer information forms and release of liability forms for therapy sessions. Your Reiki Master teacher and reiki.org are good resources.

  3. Step 3

Obtain the basic equipment and material for your practice or business, such as a massage table for therapy sessions and manuals and certificates for teaching (if you are a Reiki Master teacher). Remember that the material from your certification classes are copyrighted by your instructor; avoid plagiarism.

  4. Step 4

Develop a plan for your business: store front, home sessions and/or outcalls. Prepare a supply kit for your sessions that can include massage table, music, forms and accessories (such as linens or pillows).

  5. Step 5

Prepare promotional flyers or brochures explaining the benefits of reiki. Consider setting up a web page. List your services in complementary and alternative care networks and hospitals accepting these services.

  6. Step 6

Set up your space to reflect your philosophy and to create an environment conducive to healing and balance. Remember that when running the reiki energy, you first receive the healing energy before transmitting it outward. Set up your space and appointments to accommodate the needs of your clients and yourself.

  7. Practice and Energy Network

  8. Step 1

Obtain a minimum of Reiki Level 2 training in order to safely and adequately run the energy to transfer to others. Reiki Level 1 is for self-healing; Reiki Level 2 and above cover advanced techniques for energy transmission and transfer.

  9. Step 2

Join a network or form a reiki group to gain experience, introduce reiki and meet others with similar goals and philosophies.

  10. Step 3

Continue to practice reiki on yourself and others to maintain a high level of the energy around you and to gain insight to promote your goals and business.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider an appointment format similar to those for massage in order to give yourself time to settle between sessions (for instance, a one-hour session lasts 50 minutes).
  • Know your limits for number of clients and sessions you can handle each day, to avoid energy overload.
